Social human rights are freedom rights!
In advocation of a liberal understanding of economic,
social and cultural rights
by Michael Krennerich
Freedom
rights are commonly understood to be civil and political
rights, whereas economic, social and cultural rights (in
short social human rights), such as the right to work,
social security, the highest attainable standard of health,
adequate housing, an adequate supply of food, or education,
are traditionally viewed as being positive rights
or even welfare rights. This view is represented
not only in the relevant constitutional and social-science
literature, but also in many educational materials on
human rights. In maintaining this view, however, the fact
that also the social human rights are oriented towards
freedom, and are themselves genuine freedom rights, is
overlooked. These rights also affect the realisation of
a social order in which the people can develop freely.

"From
Nuremberg to The Hague"
The
Road to the International Criminal Court
An
exhibition of the Nuremberg
Human Rights Center on the development of international
criminal law and the International Criminal Court
The
stony path from The Nuremberg Trial 60 years ago, when
those primarily responsible for the war and war crimes
in Germany had to answer for their actions, to finally
establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC) in
2002 is presented in an exhibition, which was inaugurated
on October 2, 2006 in The Hague. It is a travelling exhibition
and comprises 16 boards, the texts written in English.
The exhibition's conception and realization was performed
by the Nuremberg Human Rights Centre on behalf of the
Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Ge rmany in
collaboration with the Goethe Institute. The Goethe Institute
intends to present the exhibition mainly in those states
which have not yet signed or ratified the Rome Statute
of the ICC, thus pointing out the good reasons that speak
for a world-wide support of the idea and work of the ICC.

Menschenrechte
means "Human rights"
Welcome
to the English version of the website www.menschenrechte.org,
the website of the "Nuremberg
Human Rights Centre ".
Originally
this site was constructed to allow users access in various
different languages. As we are mainly known to German
and Spanish users, we included a Spanish
version as well as a German
one.
Certainly we want to open up to users of English speaking
countries, that is why we decided to add an English version
of this website.
You
will not find a translation of all the contents of menschenrechte.org,
but all the documents, information and investigations
the centre publishes in English.
To have access to all the material (documents in German,
Spanish, Portuguese and English) we suggest starting at
the main page in German.
We
hope that this version makes the navigation easier for
all the English speaking users who are interested in and
struggle for human rights.
You can always send further articles in English (and certainly
other languages as well), to enlarge our English content.
